TREES: A Bet on Rethinking Economics

November 7, 2023

Among TREES' overarching goals is to rethink economics To achieve this, it starts with a deep understanding of economic reality (Research component), transforming how inequalities are taught and learned (Teaching component), and linking academic knowledge with civil society (Outreach component).

The initiative aims to promote conversations about inequalities with a focus on the Global South. These reflections emerge from a context where the consequences of inequalities are experienced daily. In this situated conversation, issues such as intersectionality, environmental justice, barriers to social mobility, merit, or unfair distribution of resources come to the fore, topics on which TREES focuses to gradually influence public policies that address these challenges. Making inequalities the central axis is TREES' commitment to give rise to new ways of thinking about the economy.

Furthermore, it is important to understand that reimagining the economy is not only done externally. The focus must also be on the discipline itself. There is a widespread idea that economists are disconnected from social reality. Therefore, from TREES, the inward look is fundamental. As Jimena Hurtado, creator of the Teaching component, states: "With this initiative, we hope that economists have the ability to ask questions and find creative solutions to specific problems that can transform this society."

As Jimena Hurtado points out: "With a combination of teaching and research, we seek to propose new ways of thinking and dialoguing about more inclusive, sustainable, and just economic models."
